THE OXFORD (FUCKING OHIO) DICTIONARY OF QUOTATIONS:
New Wave Legends, House Guests, Dealing with Preacher Profs, & The Post-Grad Blues

"I don't want to kiss you, I don't want to touch. I don't want to see you, 'cause I don't miss you that much."

- ELVIS COSTELLO,
The song "No Action," [VIDEO]
This Year's Model (Radar UK, 1978)
Because, well, my life decisions, while frustrating, are way less confusing than George Clooney's, apparently. Over 30 and concerned less with starting a family and getting married than I am about that article I read last month in Mother Jones...

* * * *
"Look, you're a man and you're a little more comfortable [with maintaining a blog under a horribly kept local "secret" online persona]. I'm a 22-year-old tiny-ass woman, skinny and light-skinned and boobs and all ... you have a sketchy-ass brother come up to you in a club, talking about how he loves what you wrote, creepin', it's different..."

"Man, what the fuck? ... You have all these books on witchcraft and demons and weird shit ... you're a librarian... and, haha, in your glasses? How can you say you're offended by being called Giles?"

- G-MONEY DA HOUSECAT,
Former Woman of Color Blogger,
On her recent visit to Oxford
So... some folks know this already, but I spent a good portion of the last month playing host to a former blogger - and ex, by the way - who made me promise not to put up a "real" post based on our time together. I did not, however, promise to not put up quotes...

So yeah, I keep things offline... sometimes.

* * * *
"Sometimes I feel like professors hide behind their degrees and classes end up feeling like... I dunno... like we're all there to just shut up, like, accept EVERYTHING they believe even if it has nothing to do with class. Sorry for whining..."

- LOCAL U. UNDERGRAD,
Via email, Nov. 12

Seriously... If you're a university student and you feel like you're in a class where the instructor's diverging from the syllabus and course description (both of which a generally viewed as contracts between grader and the graded), it's your responsibility and right (sorry... no getting anybody else to do it for you!) to meet with the instructor and air your concerns in a rational, responsible manner.

Don't wait for a course evaluation form and let a chance for real learning in a class you're paying for pass you by - in all honesty, it's the student who loses when they don't raise hand in classes to say "I disagree" or "Dr.___, what about the other side?" or take advantage of office hours - faculty can't read minds (though some, heh, librarians do read your tarot cards over beer Uptown.)

* * * *
"You guys are such pigs! Do you know how offensive and sexist it is to compare women to disposable razors that you can just throw away? Now, men on the other hand... you all are the disposable ones..."

- DUFFY McUGGS, Oct. 31
Local U. undergrad,
Bringing equality to sexism
See, there's no way to really take the sex out of sexism, especially when there's alcohol involved. Unless, well, you're one of those overly-sensitive prudes who really wishes we could just simply neuter and spay every human being with a sex drive.

* * * *
"Ugh... why didn't you, like, warn me about how fucking dark and depressing life after college is? How hard it is? It, like, fucking SUCKS!"

- UNEMPLOYED ENGINEER, Nov. 7
On the Post-Graduation Blues in a Recession
I thought I'd mentioned that, actually. Dammit. Must be getting old.

* * * *
"Ohmygosh! You're that blog person!"

"Uh, yeah... probably."

"Oh, well, that's great! [Digging through Fendi bag for a flier] Would you mind doing a blog about this? We're doing a fundraiser -"

"Um, chica, I don't take press releases. But I can get you the fax number for the paper..."

- COMMON CONVERSATION No. 238
At work a few weeks ago.
I'm not a media outlet and I generally don't take requests. But I'll be polite about it. Kinda nice to be thought of as a media outlet...

And yeah, a shitload of the Local U's female undergrads - even some of the drag queens - can afford Fendi handbags. Met a few who have one for class and one to go with their nightwear. Actually, I'm a bit worried that I actually know what the hell that means, fashion-wise.

* * * *
"Well that's just ice cream sex with a champagne moneyshot, love."

OF SEXY BEASTS & IVORY TOWERS...:
Female Readers Share Some of Their Own Erotic Tales from the Higher Education Underground

OXFORD, Ohio (ZP) -- A few years ago, I discovered that, yes, the vast majority of visitors to this site are women - by an almost 2:1 margin. Most, too, are either enrolled in college or college graduates.

And there's a reason, sure, that this here online homestead gained its reputation amongst college students, graduates, or even lifelong learner types of gals.

Integrity? Honesty? Heartfelt writing and amazing storytelling?

Heh. I wish.

Believe it or not, but I may just be the one librarian who, consistently, since 2005, has posted more about his often fucked-up sex life than he has about any other subject.

And there are more women who've never even met me in person, in all honesty, who have a better idea of my libidinous habits than most of the people I work with.

Kinda creepy at times. But, well, I do have my narcissistic exhibitionist streak, just like every other blogger... kinda fucking badass...

I made the female readership/librarian sex life connection a few years ago, ironically enough, while going through a rather nasty breakup I was specifically asked not to discuss online.

After the end of a really bad fling, particularly one where the ending involves a cornucopia of completely contradictory, malevolent emotions, well, I'm man enough to admit I'm one of those pace-around-all-night-and-sulk guys - I can't remember the time frame exactly, but I think I spent a month posting nothing but links to articles or playlists from the music I was listening to at the time.

And, well, I was spending a shitload of time in my underwear, online and chatting with pretty much anybody who stopped by this here site and added me as a chat "buddy." All hours of the night, days on end. My weekends were governed by visions of pop-up ads and online notification pings dancing in my head.

And then, well, I had a selfish idea - why not, in an effort to remind myself that all human beings have shitty relationship moments, ask some of these really cool chicks for their funniest, most embarrassing fling stories? I sent out a quick email, received about a hundred or so responses...

...And then I fucking lost the folder containing all of these wonderful pieces originally meant for a post two years ago.

Recently unearthed on an old flash drive found in a storage unit, I thought, Well, shit... what better way to return to the ol' Zenformation Professional? Let readers tell their sex stories for a change, pick out the best and most cringe-worthy and humorous...

* * * *

"When a girl's in your apartment and tells you she wants you to rip off her panties, it doesn't mean keep drooling and licking her tits like a fucking idiot. Tear those fuckers off, shut up, and get working. If not, she's gonna be faking it because you obviously, duh, can't follow fucking instructions..."

"...I went home with this guy once who just didn't get that he was a bootycall and couldn't spend the night. Worst lay ever! Anyway he wanted to stay and cuddle. He smelled like fucking ass - missed that when I was wasted but when I sobered up he was, OMG, a fucking little troll... He just couldn't deal and missed all the hints, so I got up and told him I wanted to go get a frozen pizza or something. This dude got up... put his clothes on and like ran out the door - he was gonna get me the pizza. I locked the door when he left and turned the radio on real loud...Don't think he came back with haha the fucking pizza..."

- OXFORD FUCKING OHIO

"You know what I hate dude? I hate when guys who think they fucking PWN U the second they get laid. I dated this guy once who was completely cool until we hooked up. After he just turned into this ridiculous chachasaurus... no space ever... always wanting pussy... he would like cling onto me at EVERY party EVERY bar whenever I was talking to guy friends... but when his female friends were around, oh, THAT's when I'd get some fucking space..."

"Won't ever ever ever fuck a guy taller than 6'5 again. Long story but not long anywhere else :)"

- ATHENS, Georgia

"...Anal. I don't know why some girls don't like it. I'm like ur ex man... in the butt and I'm like good to go for hrs... sadly have you ever noticed there are guys more scared of being seen as like gay just b/c they like it? Not you but guys in general...?"

- VANCOUVER, British Columbia

...In all honesty, the best sex I had when I was in college was with myself. It's funny but I quit going [to Oxford's] Uptown right after I turned 21. Lost all interest in drunken idiots. Just me, my showerhead, and, LOL, lots of Cabernet . God, I miss that massage setting..."

- CHICAGO

"...I don't know if this is what you mean by erotic and embarrassing but I've been caught heh diddling the magic button by every roommate I've had since Freshman year... Every woman masturbates everywhere..."

- ANN ARBOR, Michigan

"...Worst funny or best funny? Both would be - plz no names - with my husband when we were dating. In Fort Collins [Colorado] there used to be this great burrito place right near campus... I dunno but for some reason Roberto's used to just make me horny... We used to go there in between classes but for some reason - ____'s so gonna kill me - we'd never make it to those afternoon classes. Don't know how we both graduated..."

- BOSTON

"...I think all of them were funny embarrassing and erotic. Dooders, that's the point of college. To learn. Put that in there..."

- CLEVELAND

"...Tried this melted chocolate thing on my partner once... ah yeah... ever seen an angry dyke rushed to the hospital with burns on her tits? Not cool but she forgave me eventually and she'll kill me if you use my name..."

- TEMPE, Arizona

"...In a tube [ London subway] once after drinking. Worst bloody lay of my life. Guy looked like [David] Bowie while rumbling south... the next morning I awakened to a guy who looked so dandy, like Tony Blair or an electro deejay..."

OXFORD, Oxfordshire, UK

"The Fat Man in Canberra... not because he was huge but because he ate at the clammie like a Chinese buffet... God the slurping still gives me nightmares...Worst naughty I have ever had..."

- NEWCASTLE, New South Wales, Australia

"... I was in graduate school... I was exchanging fruitcake sex (best Zenfopro-ism EVER btw) with another TA in our office. I don't know about M____, but our TA offices are tiny, filthy holes not fit for human occupancy. He was every bit the self-absorbed, stereotypical Jewish mama's boy... a great lay but paranoid she'd find out I was Korean... We were going at it like cats and dogs, just crazy. I was about to come when his cell phone rang... he stopped and answered his fucking mother's phonecall. I pushed him off me and told him he could fuck his mother the next time... while he was still on the phone with her."

- PRINCETON, New Jersey

"Library school. I didn't sleep alone for five semesters. I was queen of the cougars. Or my ex-husband. Which was awesome. My kids were disgusted. Graduated with a 4.0."

- [Location withheld by request]

"...Okay, well, this guy from where I work on campus. I was trolling for twinks at this queer club near where I live and I had such a crush on this guy... such a HOTTIE omg... I thought he was into the scene... GAY bar, DRAG SHOW NIGHT, PRIDE flags everywhere... anyway we hung out all night, got completely shitfaced, hooked up... OMGOMGOMG the next morning fucking sucked. He thought it was a trendy metro club or something. that I was born a fem (hope that doesn't creep you out) His first trans experience btw..."

- SAN JOSE, California

[* NOTE: And no, I've not 'creeped out' by transwomen.]

"In the alley next to - don't kill me - the library during first-year. I faked it for all 20 seconds. Fucking shit, did I just say that???? "

VIGNETTES FROM A NOWHERE COLLEGE TOWN:
Graffiti as Information, Listless Tourists and Midnight Tour Guides, & How Hip-Hop Ain't Noise Pollution

OXFORD, Ohio (ZP) -- He tags, therefore he is. It's a simple enough concept.

One has to respect the simplicity of the youthful anarchist creator and the often intentionally meaningless art he or she creates, the minimalist drive of the guerrilla artist, of his permanent markers and spray paint.

And sure, it's a criminal act in most parts of the world. Hell, if caught, the kid's going to end up either painting over his work per a judge's order or paying hefty fines to the building's owner. And, sure, if I were the owner of the building I'd be beyond pissed.

Actually, if I owned the building I'd give the guy the whole wall, give him a canvas and commission a mural. There's not enough public art in this town. What is available is the usual tepid Midwestern city sculpture or the sanitized public work designed to promote tourism more than conversation.

But he tags, therefore he is.

* * * *

He's got no money for prepped canvas or studio space, barely enough money for food and clothing and rent. And his work may not be protected speech, may not even be considered legal speech, but it is expression nonetheless, his voice in vivid pigment, amongst the white noise and red bricks.

And he's not tagging the town with the territorial pissings of wannabe gangsters and DVD rental hoodlums - those works of vandalism are mostly done by poor rural kids who listened to one too many songs about Detroit's Eight Mile, heard one too many stories from older siblings about how, sure, everybody in prison, like, adopts this symbol or that symbol as a benchmark of aggression.

If he's caught, yes, he knows he'll be blamed for those acts, too. He tags, therefore he is. But even the most simple of purposes can become a complex mess of legalese and regulation and investigation.

And quite frankly, as long as his work stays off of my property, doesn't damage the finishes of my library's facilities, well, I'm quite content to just let him write what he wants, paint what he wants, tag what he wants. Then, and only then, would his works be in direct conflict with my work.

I don't think he's the kinda guy who'd vandalize a library. Reads too much.

Where do ya think taggers get some of their ideas for designs, anyway? The goddamn post office? When was the last time you saw somebody at that newsstand or convenience store, studying someone's work in a magazine or book at leisure, without being pestered to buy shit?

The rebellious nature of the guerrilla artist has always held public temples of individual learning as sacred space, a different sort of vandalism of word and bibliometric organization amongst the billions of print and electronic systems.

Libraries tag the world in different ways, with data-fueled, web-based MARC record aggregators or with call numbers along book spines, with Due Date stamps and bar codes on patron I.D. cards.

Therefore they are, too. They just are. Simple as that.

UPTOWN OXFORD (ZP) -- This town is not what she expected.

Young women dress in cocktail dresses to binge drink in the most disgusting bars. The older, more experienced undergrads dress in jeans and ballet shoes and halter tops when they're out on the town. The bar scene here is almost completely devoid of grad students, locals, or even younger faculty as the clock ticks closer towards last call.

There's no good live music scene here in Oxford Fucking Ohio, no real sense of anything cutting-edge and modern coming from within any place with a stage. She's been to two coffee shops and has yet to see a kid pouring his heart out at a poetry reading, yet to hear even one sappy acoustic ballad about getting dumped in high school or about wanting fame or even about global warming.

No indie bookstores, no record stores, no used clothing stores. Mostly just sandwich shops, bars, tanning salons, and overpriced yuppie boutiques.

"You guys must have one hell of a suicide rate," she says in between sips of her beer. "I'd go fucking crazy if I went to school here. So...ugh... whitebread."

Actually, whitebread is an understatement, I explain. This here college town is home to one of the least diverse state-supported universities in the United States, a mere 35 miles northwest of Cincinnati, a city where almost half the population isn't anywhere near white, much less whitebread.

* * * *

She drove all the way up here to the Edge of Midwestern Academia's Nowhere to watch a woman she grew up with compete in her first game as a college athlete, her younger sister's best friend. Having friendly faces in the bleachers was supposed to help take the edge off.

And they were all supposed to hang out together after the action left the field, chill and goof off and have a blast in a college town that was once renowned for its nightlife, hang out like they did in high school.

Alas, the best laid plans of mice and college girls on road trips...

Sure, I tell her, Oxford was once sorta renowned as a hip college town, back in the 1970s and 1980s, back when the town was making cameos in Rain Man, its long-gone radio station playing tunes in the background as Dustin Hoffman and Tom Cruise bickered about K-Marts in Cincinnati.

But in the naked now of 2008...

I didn't have to finish my thought. The rolling of her eyes was enough to convince me that, yeah, she'd figured that part out. Instead of partying away a long holiday weekend, her kid sister and the childhood friend were back in a hotel room, playing cards, while she was sitting in a preppy undergrad dive chatting away with some strange guy who'd given her his number the day before.

A local. Someone not a student. Someone who's, well...

You know.

* * * *

"No shit? You're a librarian? My aunt's a librarian."

"Yup."

"But you're, what, 22? 23?"

"Um, little older."

"Nuh-uh. No way you're older than I am."

"Huh." I pull out the ol' driver's license, along with a business card, lean into her. "Look at that. A 30-year-old librarian. How'd THAT fucking happen?"

She laughs and grabs my arm, kills her shitty warm beer.

"NOW... you're gonna be MY librarian and give ME that tour of ____ University of... fucking Ohio, or what? Let's bail before I puke..."

Seriously. She dragged me out of a shitty bar at two in the morning on a Sunday to give a walking tour of this fine city. And a tour of Oxford Fucking Ohio, during the school year is better than any museum in town. Complete shitshow most weekends, an orgy of stupidity, a grindhouse version of every college experience cliche.

Think Wild Kingdom meets Girls Gone Wild, with the bad guys in the Revenge of the Nerds movies thrown in, just for shits and giggles.

* * * *

Apparently, I'm a fairly decent tour guide. She had no clue why she called me, why she suddenly had some burning desire to not drink by herself, why she suddenly wanted company and a tour.

At least, well, that's what she told me in the morning.

OXFORD, Ohio (ZP) -- Biggie Smalls. The Notorious B.I.G. Also known as Christopher Wallace.

You know. The guy who used to love it when you called him Big Poppa, before he was assassinated (fuck that murder shit, the man, like Tupac Shakur in 1996, was ASSASSINATED) in Los Angeles a mere fifty yards from Petersen Automotive Museum back in March 1997.

And this kid, a self-described expert on Rock & Roll History at all of eighteen, doesn't get the reference. In fact, he's indignant about it - lots of rappers get shot, right? And he was only, like, seven when some drug dealer got shot.

I try explaining the rapper's unsolved death, the tragic feud between what was then known as East Coast and West Coast Hip-Hop, its place in Rock history, but he puts a palm in my face.

"Man, who cares about rap! I'm talking about Rock & Roll! Nobody'll remember that black shit in another 20 years."

Nobody will remember hip-hop in another two decades? That black shit?

* * * *

You know, rock snobs, mostly of the Caucasian Persuasion, have been claiming such things for three decades, since the days of DJ Kool Herc and Melle Mel and Grandmaster Flash and the Sugar Hill Gang.

When Blondie first introduced the hip-hop sound to a supposedly white rock world, with the rap-inspired "Rapture" in 1981, that wasn't important - just a phase, those critics said. And in 1984, when Afrika Bambaataa teamed up with legendary rock bassist Bill Laswell and former Sex Pistol Johnny "Rotten" Lydon, they said that wasn't rock & roll - it was, as the song suggested, World Destruction.

And in 1986, when Run-DMC's Jam Master Jay first dropped Aerosmith's "Walk This Way" onto a turntable, when the drum loops were added and the lyrics of a rock staple were rapped instead of howled, that wasn't rock, either. I mean, it's not like a bunch of, ugh, rappers saved Aerosmith's career or anything. A flash in the pan, those critics claimed.

When Anthrax and Public Enemy teamed up to Bring Tha Noize in the 1990s, when rapper Ice-T incited the wrath of the White Motherfucking House because of a heavy metal song, back when bands like 2 Live Crew won battles against artistic censorship in Florida that even the great Jim Morrison couldn't...

* * * *

Nope. Everybody's just going to forget about hip-hop. And that black shit.

I mean, it's not like anybody remembers Chuck Berry, James Brown, Jimi Hendrix, Bad Brains, the Motown Sound, Bootsy Collins, Marvin Gaye, Sam Cooke, Bo Diddley...

... Sly Stone, Michael Jackson, Lenny Kravitz, Ben Harper, OutKast, Gnarls Barkley...

I mean, nobody remembers those guys, either.

Right?

Oh.

And the 18-year-old rock critic? Dude was wearing a Bob Marley T-shirt.

Reggae? Nah, probably not Rock & Roll, either.

GHOSTS OF WOMEN, JUGS OF WINE,
& OTHER MIDNIGHT THINGS:
I May Be Getting Older Every Year, But at Least The Flings That Got Me This Far...

OXFORD, Ohio (ZP) – I woke her up at five-thirty in the morning, exactly, fifteen minutes before my alarm clock usually goes off.

I was already awake, so why not just get up and face the day? That's what I usually do when I'm by myself. Why change who I am, just because somebody's in bed beside me?

She rolled over, whined a bit about the time, and kissed me on the cheek. Morning breath. She was worried about what I'd think about how bad her breath was. And, well, jugs of cheap wine rarely leave anybody's mouth, including my own, smelling minty fresh first thing in the morning.

“I could sleep forever.”

“I'm sure you could, hon.”

"Heh, so I'm not just a 'chica' now?"

She stretched, rolled over onto my shoulder, put her nose into my neck. Her hair was still wet from her blonde-to-brunette sinkjob the night before, still smelled of shampoo and conditioner and, well, the added bit of sweat that'd built up over the course of the night.

Well, for whatever it was that'd happened, it'd been a fun night, at least.

“So...”

“So...what?”

“Chica, this is kinda awkward.”

“Well... then let's not be awkward. How about we stay here, like, in bed all day?”

“It's Monday. Work.”

I'd promised her I'd wake her before I left for work, promised that, yeah, this was not going to be one of those things I often refuse to talk about, one of those silent, Let's Pretend It Didn't Happen mornings.

But first, I needed coffee. And a shower. And some Motrin.

I slid from against her warm body, out into the cold air that had filled my bedroom overnight, thanks to an open window.

After I loaded up the coffeepot and flipped the switch, I climbed beneath a scalding spray of water, tried to figure out what had inspired the previous night's accident – an accident on my part, one that, well, no guy in his late 20s should make with someone barely old enough to vote.

It wasn't just the cheap wine. It wasn't the fact that she'd found those old PJ Harvey albums in my living room, or the fact that she'd confessed her secret desire to write poetry for a living. And it wasn't just the conversation, the situation, or even the fact that she looked a whole hell of a lot better as a brunette, either...

She reminded me of someone else, another woman, from the past.

* * * *

Mrs. Kitty was the first person I met in Baton Rouge back in 2002, the first person I knew in all of Louisiana.

She was my height, tall for a woman at five-foot-nine, a brunette, skinny as a rail and as flat-chested, in her words, as a starving board. She had the most beautiful green eyes, just enough wrinkles beneath them to let a guy know that she'd seen hard times. She wore braces, yes, the old-fashioned metal wire kind, and they sparkled as she talked in her thick Acadiana twang.

And, well, the wrinkles didn't lie, either. Kitty did have one mean-ass sonuvabitch of a husband. They'd been high school sweethearts; she'd been an honor student before he'd talked her into dropping out and getting married once he'd graduated. She became a bride, with her parent's consent, at seventeen.

Never met the guy. The only things I know about him come from the things I remember her telling me. He was a cop, a good man most of the time, only cheated on her occasionally (no clue, really, she looked like a Cajun version of Kate Fucking Moss), and, well, for a good man he sure liked to verbally abuse her – she was a fuckin' retard, apparently, because she never finished high school.

First, we'd start talking at the mailboxes at the front of the complex, talk for a few hours about nothing in particular. After a few impromptu discussions we realized that the mosquitoes and the humidity were killing us. And since conversation always goes better with a cold six-pack of beer, we started hanging out in my apartment -- she'd stop by whenever she got bored, which was usually whenever her husband worked nights.

And, well, in Louisiana, there's no such thing as just one six-pack of beer. Conversations, throughout the South, just aren't that short. Ever.

* * * *

Well, chica, I just up and moved to Louisiana, left the West Coast with barely a grand in cash to my name, in a Ford pickup loaded full of everything I owned – exactly 21 boxes of junk, mostly books and those cassette tapes there...

... California squeezed all it could out of me, took my love of journalism and raped it, smashed that love against the corporate rocks. After I left broadcasting, I spent a year pretty much drifting from dollar to dollar, picking up freelance work, odd part-time construction gigs, and, well, I worked quite a few shady jobs as well, most of which I'll never, ever discuss...

... And then I heard about this racket, this Library School thing. I'd loved libraries, had always been a lover and user of the information they contained. And I'd never seen or heard of a librarian paid by way of an envelope beneath a napkin, slid across a table...

So there ya go, chica. Here I am. Waiting for grad school to start, dicking around and being a drifter one last time...

Kitty was, for some reason, fascinated by my strange-ass, often fucked-up stories. To me, they've always seemed boring. Actually, most people tend to find my stories a bit boring, drawn out, and, well, pointless.

But how that woman loved hearing me tell my story – I was the first guy she'd ever met from Virginia, the first guy she'd ever met who'd lived in Colorado and California. And that made me interesting, I guess. She'd never traveled much farther than the Gulf Coast, save for her honeymoon to Florida – her husband spent more time fishing than fucking on that trip, apparently. Tragic.

We'd drink beer, play Twenty Fucking Questions. I got in some of my own, too, learned quite a bit about how to survive living in the City of the Big Red Stick.

Rice and beans? Cheap. Cajun jambalaya? Far superior to the Creole variety. Surviving trips to the Winn-Dixie? Shop for groceries on Sunday mornings, so you can get the best deals before the old ladies get out of church. Abita beer? Goes great with cold boudin, crackers, and, especially, with Southern Comfort...

The more she hung out in my apartment, the more we talked and drank and smoked cigarettes, the more I wondered what husband could call himself a man, if he chose beer and stripper pussy over such a bright, beautiful person. I'd forget that she had a husband. I'd pretend that he wasn't real, or that he was just a placeholder, a stand-in. Again, never met the guy. Never cared to, either.

That was a mistake. A husband is a husband, his wife is his wife, until death or divorce do they part. There are dangers to drinking Southern Comfort straight from a lipstick-coated bottle, late into the night. Especially when you find yourself forgetting all about those two rings on the fingers of the hand that's passing you the bottle.

* * * *

So, yeah. Shit happens.

Late one night, during a horrendous thunderstorm, a mysterious knock at the door, a loud, machinegun-fast series of raps, echoed through my darkened apartment – lightning had knocked out the electricity and, well, I'd gone to be early.

The knock startled me because, well, Kitty was the only person I knew in Louisiana, the first friend I'd made in Baton Rouge... and she was supposed to be out of town, celebrating her wedding anniversary with her husband.

Not sure who was outside, I grabbed my old trusty machete (and yes, I still answer the mysterious late-night knocks at the door with some blade or firearm tucked behind my back), turned on a flashlight, and made my way to the living room...

And there she was. Kitty was soaking wet, as if she'd been wandering about in the rain for hours, black and beige ribbons of makeup streaking her cheeks, dyeing her white teeshirt.

She'd been worked over a bit, slapped once or twice, by her mysterious, anonymous husband. He'd forgotten that they'd planned an anniversary getaway, picked up an extra shift for the overtime, staggered home from the bars just drunk and pissed off enough...

She'd lit him up with a barrage of insults the moment he'd walked through the door. She'd bought lingerie, had booked an expensive room at some fancy inn in Mississippi, even booked a few nonrefundable plantation and museum tours on their overextended credit cards.

So he slapped her once or twice, told her to go over to the faggot librarian's place, to go on a trip with her new boyfriend, the California Boy a few apartments away, the guy she was always hanging out with, drinking with, talking about...

Standing in my doorway, shivering, she explained that she hit him with the heaviest thing she could find – a book I'd loaned her. She'd hit him back, bitchslapped him across the face several times with a hardback copy of Isaac Asimov's Book of Facts.

It wasn't the money or the disrespect that drove her to retaliate; it was the accusation of adultery, a razor-sharp comment he'd made about how she and I were spending too much time together, were fucking while he was at work, that he'd started cheating on her years before I'd moved to Louisiana in anticipation that, one day, she'd cheat on him...

... She'd never thought about it, at least with me, until he'd mentioned it, never thought an educated guy who'd been all over the place could be interested in her skinny Cajun ass...

And she fell into my arms, rain and tears and mascara melting into my shoulder. I held her and told her that, well, if she needed a place to stay, she could always stay with the faggot librarian. She ran her hands up my back, I ran my hands down to her waist, and we entangled ourselves in something, a moment.

And so she spent the night. And we turned her husband's accusation, finally, into a self-fulfilling prophesy, on the floor, on the couch, and on the cheap curbside-recovered kitchen table on which I'm writing these words, six years later, in the magical land of Ohio.

She quit stopping by for beer and conversation after that night. I never saw her at the mailboxes, never ran into her again. And I never even found out what her husband looked like, or if she told him where she'd stayed that night, what had happened. That's probably a good thing. I just can't respect a guy who'd voluntarily choose cutting bait over a night, a lifetime, with Mrs. Kitty.

Just two days before my graduate school orientation, two weeks later, I watched through my bedroom window as she loaded up her little Toyota with a few boxes of her own, as she began her own escape from a life that had sucked her dry.

I figured she'd come by and say goodbye before she left. She never did. C'est la vie. It's for the best, really.

She was the first person I met in the great state of Louisiana, that great city on the banks of the Mississippi, Baton Rouge...

* * * *

I finished showering, dressed, went to the kitchen to grab a cup of my signature, black - as - Lucifer's - jockstrap coffee. The aroma alone could kick in a mule's teeth.

Christ, dude! You're turning 30 soon. Big Three, Big Zero. And she's HOW old? FUCK FUCK FUCK! What a shitty way to blow your New Year's resolution, man...

She'd dosed off again while I'd been getting ready for work, while I was in that kitchen alone with my thoughts, choking down that first cup of java and eating my bowl of oatmeal. I stood by the side of the bed for a good ten minutes, staring in silence, a million fragmented thoughts racing through my mind. I'm sure I looked like some predator, some lurking menace, some skulking creep of a goon...

She doesn't even look like her. She does sorta look like PJ Harvey, though... and...

Christ. Nine-fucking-teen. I felt like a kiddie raper. I still, weeks later, feel that way, to some extent. Just because it's legal doesn't make it necessarily right – if two people have nothing in common, haven't been through some of the same shit, then they probably shouldn't fuck.

Age, really, is just a number; our experiences make us who we are, build our lives up towards our eventual fates. But for some folks, well, when the younger person's experience doesn't even come close to making up for what time cannot...

I finally slid back into my own bed. I'd decided to not tell her the whole truth, to not tell her that Carlo Rossi and her hair and the rain outside had lied to me, in perfect harmony, had turned her into some almost-forgotten Cajun girl from my past.

She rolled into me, awakened by the sudden shift of the springs. There would be no avoiding a discussion.

“So...”

She kissed me to shut me up (women do that often, too, dammit), morning breath be damned. At least I'd brushed my teeth.

“Jason, look, let's just call it good. We're not each other's, like, type, ya know? And, jeez, you're so--”

“Old?”

She kissed me again, longer this time. Her mouth was beginning to taste like mine, all minty fresh, with just a hint of black-as-death French Roast. I didn't notice any morning breath.

“Um, no. You're not old. But you're kinda straight-edge. Cute, kinda, but hella boring, dude.”

“So...”

“So why don't we just NOT talk about it, okay? We had fun, right?”

And with that, she went back to sleep. She wasn't the ghost of Mrs. Kitty anymore. And I fell back asleep, fully clothed. It was seven fucking thirty in the morning. And the birds were chirping outside my window, the neighbors were arguing, and the world kept right on spinning.

I ended up late for work. On a Monday morning, no less. I'm, like, so, like, straight edge that it almost bothered me.

Straight edge? Me?

OXFORD CONFIDENTIAL:
Snake Brothers are Mysterious, Infuriating Animals
(When You Don't Have a Penis...)

SNAKE BROTHER -- Slang. A term used to refer to the unique bond between two or more men who have had sexual intercourse with the same person at sometime in their lives, thus creating an overlap in sexual histories. Provenance of term unknown but may be indigenous to North America. However, the concept was understood by Ancient Mesopotamian, Asian, and European civilizations. For gay men the term also applies, but with more complications to the dynamic.

For female equivalent, see
TRENCH SISTER.

OXFORD, Ohio (ZP) -- I waited. The question was coming. I could feel it.

As pathetic as it is, I'm actually quite skilled at these sorts of things. I had a sneaking suspicion, too, that my sparring partner also had some experience in such verbal sport...

"So Jason, you and _____ went to school together in Greeley?"

Before I could answer her husband's question, the Diva intervened.

"Honey. I knew lots of guys in Colorado. We hung out. Jason was a reporter..."

I laughed, oh so slightly, nodded, took a sip of my iced tea.

"Oh. So you just hung out then?"

I took a bite of my salad and tried to not simply burst into all-out laughter, nodded with a full mouth in the direction of his loving wife. Lunch was her idea. She could answer the question.

Oh yeah. He knew. Or, at least, he suspected.

The game afoot! Time to cry Havoc!, let slip the dogs of war...

* * * *

Despite all the discomfort and uneasiness, I couldn't help but wonder, after all these years, if the Diva still got off on being handcuffed to bathroom sinks and spanked, or if she and the ol' hubby had ever, well...

Back in the day, she was such a fun little thing, all explosive darkness and piss and rage, domineering, driven by lust and hidden insecurity. I was, well, a lot more fun and free myself back in those days, too, cloaked in my own naivety and ignorance, pushing my boundaries with drugs and booze and sex...

Oh, trust me. I'm sure the Diva's husband was pondering similar things. I've been in his shoes before. And he'd, heh, probably been in mine. Dogs of war, since the time of Julius Caesar, typically hunt the same prey because such beasts are usually bred in the same pounds and kennels.

What husband wouldn't wonder, seriously, what his wife was like before he knew her, back when she was a Colorado Chicana! wild child, smack dab in the midst of her Oooh! This will piss off Mom and Dad! I'll fuck an Anglo! phase? He's undoubtedly heard stories, probably bits and fragments, here and there from friends of hers, relatives...

What husband wouldn't be at least curious about that past? And, frankly, what lover from the past wouldn't be intrigued by thoughts of how women of memory evolve and grow and mature into the present and future wives and lovers of such noble, intelligent men?

Snake brothers, of course, aren't supposed to ask such questions out loud. That'd be rude. And, well, quite possibly dangerous. The unwritten rule of the Cult of the Snake Brother is, well, that such things are best not discussed, left silent.

Hell, the snake brothers of Helen fought the Trojan War because they couldn't handle such knowledge. Mark Antony, Caesar, and Ptolemy destroyed much of the Ancient Western World because, well, they couldn't deal with the fact that Cleopatra initiated the dynasties of Rome and Egypt into the phallic serpentine brotherhood.

Why, now, would modern men ruin such a wonderful lunch with such stupidity? Life's too short these days, the social norms that once drove Primitive Man mad with jealousy now a curious antiquity for the educated and experienced.

* * * *

The Diva was not amused with the pissing contest, our testing of certain waters to see which Snake Brother would wince first.

"We were, you know, just ... friends..."

The Diva then went into a long, drawn-out explanation as to how she and I knew each other back in 1997, explained in twisting, prefabricated answers that almost made me wish that I was, indeed, the guy she was describing...

All she had to say, really, was that we were... just... friends. Pauses, like photographs, really are worth a thousand words.

The Husband smirked. I smirked. Nothing makes for a good meal like good dinner theater. He kept looking at me. I kept looking back at him, nodding and eating my salad.

Men really do bond over making women uncomfortable. Payback, yes, for infecting our gender with the cooties and wet dreams of youth...

At least she acknowledged that, well, both of her male dining companions had just...friended the shit out of her at some point in the last decade.

* * * *
A decade.

A whole fucking decade.

That's enough time to turn any snake brother into as docile a reptile as your average timber rattler in winter. A man's blood, at least the blood of seasoned, educated men, rarely boils at the mere hint of a partner's previous sexual history. Who a woman fucked in some long-forgotten house in Ratfuck Colorado is, to such men, as historically meaningless as Abe Lincoln's last shit in the White House.

It's not like her husband was getting ready to build a goddamn wooden horse to storm the table or anything. And it's not like I was gonna chew my breadsticks down into a dagger to stab him on the way to the Forum.

Jesus H. Christ. The rules of the Snake Brother Cult have, well, evolved since the days of spears, Greek fire, and spoken Latin...

* * * *

I kept grinning like a retarded clown, sipping on my iced tea and gnawing on my salad. The Diva's husband was half-grinning like a razor-scalped madman, drinking his wine and chewing up his vegan pasta.

And the Diva changed the subject. Quickly.

"So Jason... are you seeing anybody? Married?"

Well-played.

Check. But not checkmate. There was still game left...

* * * *

Some women just don't have the same sense of adventure they had when they were young, back when they wore no underwear, wore plaid miniskirts and purple lipstick and tight black Sonic Youth teeshirts, back when such women seduced and screwed like demons whilst certain former 19-year-old aspiring reporter's housemates watched through the living room window...

Rather than bring up the past decade, I simply explained that, well, I'd found religion and the Republican Party, had become a Born-Again Virgin, held hands with peroxide blondes at church potlucks...

The Diva nodded and went back to her lunch.

Wait. Does she really buy that horseshit? Is that believable after ten years?

Holy fuck, we were just talking about strip clubs and blowjobs ten minutes ago...

* * * *

The hubby leaned in, smiled.

"Heh. Sounds like Cincinnati. So you really are married then?"

We both snickered like 14-year-olds staring at our first glossy boobies in a copy of Hustler.

And as I explained, in between snickers, that, well, I've been engaged two-and-a-half times in the past 10 years, as I explained that, yeah, why the hell would I want to get married and ruin my peace and tranquility...

"Dude, you're a really cool guy."

"Yeah, man. I see how you got the hot goth girl here."

"Hey, do you like Tom Waits? You look like a Waits kinda guy..."

"Well, fuck yeah, dude."

"Baby, he likes Tom Waits! Did you know that? Hey, we caught that gig down in Louisville..."

The Diva was not amused.

What'd she expect? C'mon now.

Snake brothers usually have more in common than simple momentary spins on the ol' vagina rollercoaster. Hell, if there weren't similarities, we probably wouldn't have ever been attracted to the same woman, or once had the same woman attracted to us, in the first place...

I've been snake brothers with worse.

Being a Snake Brother is just one of those mysterious bonds between men that even some of the most modern, liberated women just aren't comfortable facing.

And, sometimes, that's just fucking hilarious.
